MY KIDS ARE IN CARE – WHAT NEXT?
a workshop
for parents whose children were removed in the past 2 years
The most important thing I learned in this workshop…
Rights and where I stand, what I should be more involved in and I do have a say in certain situations about my children’s lives and their safety.
What services are available and what steps I can take and what I can ask when trying to get information to and from DCJ.
(Parent Participants 2024)
This is a three-day workshop for parents whose children were removed sometime in the past 12 months. It is run by members of the FISH team who have first hand experience working through the system to connect with their children.
This workshop was developed by parents and peer workers in collaboration with caseworkers and managers as part of the FISH Listening Campaign in 2022-23.
NAVIGATING THE SYSTEM CAN BE
VERY DIFFICULT AND CONFUSING – it’s like a maze
UPCOMING DATES IN 2024
* Mon 25th, Wed 26th & Fri 28th NOVEMBER 2024
These groups will only run if we have 4 or more parents attending. If we do not have enough, parents who can make it will be asked to consider other dates.
– workshops are free for parents –
We have limited funding and only 10 spots in each workshop. We want to give this opportunity to as many parents as possible. If you are accepted to attend a workshop but you change your mind or can’t make it, please let our peer workers know. They can organise another parent to attend.
Donations from agencies for printing and catering would be very helpful.
Information & activities in the workshop cover:
- Maintaining your parent identity and role
- Knowing about the impact of removal & care
- Understanding & navigating tricky processes
- Managing boundaries, behaviour and safety
- Partnering with workers for good outcomes
- Finding services and programs that work for you
It might help you to know more about different processes to follow and how to handle them. You might need some help with what others expect of you and connecting with your child.
The most important thing I learned in this workshop…
Better ways to be prepared for meetings.
How to advocate for my children.
